Chuck was a poet and a bit of a mystic.
I surely enjoyed sitting at the table with he and my mother dining and talking up a storm. One winter weekend we had our own university" where we taught each other classes. Chuck taught us film splicing, mom taught breadmaking, and I taught fly-tying. He was a tremendous orator. He made great salads and a delicious chili like dish called goop. My daughter Katherine loved him. So did my mother, Grete. Mom and Chuck were gypsies together; traveling all over together. One time they took my dog Mandan to Mexico (I am not sure he had proper visa or papers) for an adventure I am sure only they 3 know the details to.
We cooked a few great fish together. One night a Salmon so fat it caught the oven on fire.
He talked about that silver wonder for years.

Words always fail me at times like this. I knew Chuck since coming to SD in 1976. My most vivid memory of him is what he said at Grete's memorial, when he poetically expressed the difference between what he looked like on the outside and what he was feeling on the inside. I can't remember his words. (As the saying goes, people will forget what you say, but they will never forget how you made them feel.) If only we had a world of Chucks. I am so glad that he and Grete found each other, what a blessing for both of them.

For many years, Charles Nauman was known in our household as Bestechuck. This was a play on the Norwegian name for Grandfather, which is Besetfar (literally; the best father) which matched Grete's name as Bestemor (the best mother). Bestechuck (the best Chuck) really was something special, and he meant so much to us all. We will remember him fondly for his sense of adventure, his wonderful conversation, the passion he had for life's wonders, and his joy for family. His spark will live forever in our hearts.
We send our sincerest love to Talli, David, and the whole Nauman Family.

We are so sorry to read about the passing of Chuck. May God comfort all of you during your sad days and give you the strength to cope with your thoughts. During your disquieting days, think about seeing him again as a young and healthy man full of life and doing all the things he loved. (‘loss of a loved one’ - jw dot org.) Ponder over what you’d like to say and how big your hugs will be when we are reunited with our loved ones again. (Acts 24:15) Our sincere condolences to the Nauman family.
