Obituary of Franklin G. Carter

Please share a memory of Franklin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Frank was born November 26, 1936 in Yankton, SD to Glen W. and Leona H. (Smith) Carter in hard times as were many at that time.  He had a near death close call several times in his younger years.  Due to health problems, it prevented him from going past the eighth grade, but he didn’t let that hold him back.   Frank worked many jobs from about 12 years of age.  He started at the bottom of the ladder and kept up little by little going up the ladder with determination.  He worked on the building of the Gavin’s Point Dam.  He went to San Diego and worked 4 years in the aircraft industry.  In 1961 Frank and his family made plans to return to Yankton where he worked for Kaiser Heating and Air Conditioning for 6 years.  Due to a bad back, he left Kaiser and worked for Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton which was his home church.  In 1972 he left the job at the church after 7 years and went to work for the City of Yankton for 31 years in many positions and retired as a Supervisor of Maintenance.  After retiring, Frank was very involved in volunteering at the Center and in the community.  He was a Yankton Firefighter for 23 years and a school bus driver for the Yankton School District for 28 years and was a member of Christ The King Church.

Frank married Virginia Kasulka in May of 1956 and from this union were born 4 children-Vickie, Michelle, Calvin, and Christopher.  He also raised his nephew James Carter as his own. Frank then married Barbara Kollasch in April of 1984.  He adopted his daughters Misty and Michelle from this union.

Frank is survived by his children Vickie Lammers of Yankton, SD ,Michelle (Dale) Alink of Tabor, SD Calvin (Amy) of Sioux Falls, SD, James Carter of Yankton, SD, Christopher (Becky) Carter of Phoenix, AZ, Misty (Jason) Eskins of Yankton, SD, Michelle (Liz) Carter of Sioux Falls, SD, 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, brother George (JoAnn) Smith of Yankton, SD , and many nieces and nephews.
