HORA TWYLA

Twyla J. Hora, age 91 of Menno, SD passed away Saturday, January 4, 2025, at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno, SD.  Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm prayer service Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the Olivet Christian Church in Olivet, SD. Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Olivet Christian Church with Pastor Arlyn Coalter officiating. Burial will follow at the Wittenberg Cemetery in rural Olivet.  Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel of Menno is assisting the family with arrangements. Twyla Joyce Hora was born October 10, 1933 to Henry J. and Elizabeth (Asche) Groen north of Olivet, SD in Wittenberg township.   

Twyla was baptized December 27, 1936 in the Wittenberg Evangelical Church by Rev E.T. Jensen.  She was confirmed and became a member of the Wittenberg Church and later joined the Olivet Christian Church. 

Twyla attended several different grade schools in Wittenberg township.  She graduated from Scotland High School in 1951.  She attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, received her teaching certificate, and then taught at a rural school in Hutchinson County. 

On April 17,1952 Twyla married Robert Hora, son of Frank J. and Julia (Novak) Hora at her parents' home north of Olivet, SD by Rev. Floyd Breaw.  After Robert returned from military service in Korea, they farmed north of Olivet in the Wittenberg area.  To this union four sons were born:  James, Darrell, Dale, and Curtis. 

Twyla shared her musical talents in her church through singing solos, playing piano, and accompanying the choir. Twyla was also active in the Sunday School program, the United Methodist Women serving as president and as a district officer, and the Women’s Christian Temperence Union. She also gave many piano lessons. 

Grateful for having shared her life are James (Karla) of Parkston, SD, Darrell (Joanne) of Menno, SD, Dale (Peggy) of Olivet, SD and Curtis (Eileen) of Irene, SD. 

Grandchildren:  Justin (Amanda) Hora, Megan (Eric) Bannwarth, Jason (Samantha) Larson, Eric Larson, Joyce Hora, Josh (Andrea) Hora, Andrew (Alyssa) Hora, and Abby (Caleb) Preszler. 

Great grandchildren:  Robert, Riley, Bethany Hora, Noah, Kate, Anne Bannwarth, Irish and Tommy Roe, Emmett, Amelia, Cecilia Hora, Eloise Hora, and baby Preszler in March. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert in 2004, siblings Allen (Reva) Groen, Roland (Ruth) Groen, Ruth (Walter) Erbele, and Darlene (Fred) Winter. 

Memorials will be directed toward the Menno/Olivet Care Center, Wittenberg Cemetery Upkeep Fund, and Missions.
