Woody was the first person that I went hitchhiking with. In early June 1972, after our Junior year, Woody and I took off on a road trip and ended up in Pine Ridge. I was very naïve as to the politics of the day (I saw no difference then or now in skin color). I learned a lot just staying in Pine Ridge for a couple of days, as there were some men there who didn't care for people like me at the time (I am white). Woody said it was not a good idea for us to be in Pine Ridge. So we hitchhiked to Rapid City. We could not locate our friends in Rapid, so we decided to stay in a park with Rapid Creek running through it. It rained so hard that we took refuge in another place. The next morning we decided to come home, not knowing about the flood that wiped out the park we were staying in. If we would have stayed in either place (Pine Ridge, Rapid City) longer one or both of us would not have made it home. I am glad to have been Woodys friend.
