Obituary of Gerald John Suing

Gerald John Suing, age 85 of St. Helena, NE died Monday, April 14, 2014 at the Golden Living Center, Hartington, NE. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Gerald Suing will be 10:30 AM, Monday, April 21, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Helena, NE with Rev. Eric Olsen officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM, Sunday, at Immaculate Conception Church with a Wake service at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. The Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, SD is assisting with service details. Gerald was born on October 13, 1928 to Hugo and Anna (Wortmann) Suing in St. Helena, NE. Gerald married Joan Albrecht on August 23 1950 and they lived happily for 63 years until his passing. To this marriage, they were blessed with five children: Joe, Mary, Laurie, Mark, and Aaron. Gerald took over the family farm when his father passed away and was recognized with the Nebraska Pioneer Farm award. He was active in his church, sang many years as a member of the choir, EME, was active in many jobs, worked for many years on the Rural Water Project, and served on many committees and boards. Gerald loved to go deer hunting and playing cards with his friends. Gerald was a loving and devoted husband and father. He had a generous nature and was kind and respectful to all he knew or met. He was a great teacher in all of life's lessons and was humble and never boastful. His deed always followed his word: Caring, compassionate and affectionate. His strength was gentleness; gentleness his strength. Gerald had an amazing smile that matched his twinkling eyes. He will always be cherished and remembered. Gerald is survived by his wife, Joan M. Suing of St. Helena, NE; his children: Joe of St. Helena, NE, Mary of St Helena, NE, Laurie of Lincoln, NE, Mark of Ocean Park, WA, and Aaron (Stacey) of St. Helena, NE; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; one brother, Henry and Georgine Suing of Yankton, SD; and four sisters: Jeannette Lammers of Hartington, NE, Joyce Albrecht of Menominee, NE, Margaret Ann Schmidt of Menominee, NE and Rose Mary Guenther of Crofton, NE. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and one brother, Cyril Suing.
