Adam Bender Sr., age 70, of Yankton, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Tuesday, October 15, 2013. A Memorial service will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel in Yankton, SD with Rev. Ron Johnson officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be in the Vangen Lutheran Cemetery, Mission Hill, SD with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 Honor Guard, Yankton and the SDARNG Honor Guard, Sioux Falls. Visitations will begin at 6:00 PM, Friday, October 18, 2013 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a video tribute and memory sharing at 7:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
Adam was born on May 25, 1943 to Peter and Bertha (Berreth) Bender in LaMoure, ND. He married RoseMary Waltz on November 5, 1961. Adam attended school in Ellendale, ND.
The family lived in Ellendale, ND, Huron, SD, and Parker, SD before moving to Yankton in 1977. Adam worked for Wally's U-Market, Cimpl meat packing, Concrete Materials, and a drove school bus. He also served in the Army, Air Force, and Army National Guard for 23 years.
Adam was a member at the Moose and enjoyed shooting pool, tinkering in his shop, and fishing.
He is survived by his sons, Adam Jr. of Los Angeles, CA, and Brad (Rhonda) of Yankton, SD; daughters: Tammy (Randy) Leach of Red Wing, MN, Jodie of Yankton, SD and Hope (Jim) Lanz of Mondovi, WI; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, his wife, RoseMary, daughter, Constance Schenkel, and grandson, Kyle Bender.
