Lorene R. Pokorny, age 76, of Yankton, SD passed away Sunday, April 07, 2013 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. After her services her remains have been gifted to the Sanford USD School of Medicine, Vermillion, SD. Visitations will begin at 6:00 PM, Tuesday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Lorene Regina Pokorny, daughter of George and Mary (Meng) Schmidt, was born September 6, 1936 in Yankton, SD. Lorene attended grade school in Wynot, NE. She was joined in marriage to Lawrence Henry Pokorny on October 8, 1956. Nine children were blessed to this union: Lawrence, Susan, Lora, Bruce, Brenda, Sally, Lisa, Sheila, and Beth.
Lorene served the Yankton School District for 28 years until her retirement in 2005. After retirement, Lorene worked for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Rectory. Lorene enjoyed cooking for her family and spending time with them. She also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino. She will be remembered for her love of family, for her love of the church, and for her selfless giving to others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary (Meng) Schmidt; granddaughter, Heather Llewellyn; grandson, Joseph Pokorny; and siblings: Henry, Leonard, Gerald, Anthony, Katherine Rodekuhr, and Raymond.
